Perusing the laughably inconsequential contents of my writing portfolio in the vague attempt to put it into some kind of order that might help me further my so-called career, I did nevertheless find perhaps my finest sub-editing moment.

The feature concerned the composer Benjamin Britten and his relationship with his gay lover, Peter Pears (pronounced to rhyme with 'steers'). You have to say it fast, but I managed to get in the headline:

"Britten: His Pears".

Well. It made ME laugh.
